Neil Celani

Neil, a Colorado native, has been a member of the coop since 2009.

Neil's Artist Statement:
I live my life with passion and obsession.  Clay, for the past eight years, has fueled my artistic creativity and curiosity by allowing me to express my reflection of life.  Making utilitarian clay work allows me to represent, in stylized form, the earth below us allowing both functionality and artistic merit to have an equal voice.  Finding growth and insight through constant repetition of not only making but also using my pottery has stimulated me to continue to push and pursue clays seemingly endless possibilities.  The clay artist lifestyle has driven me to work hard while I create objects to use and reflect on.  Clay demands an enormous amount of attention and patience and with each piece comes a chance to learn, within each pot lays the seed for the next.  It is this constant analysis, reflection and revision that leads to my most proud work.  Each object that passes through my hands exposes the fragile, volatile, and serendipitous nature of the ceramic process.   While the engaging struggle to make refined work often finds success the clay process keeps me humble in its often baffling results.  Our culture is saturated with disposable objects and the handmade often goes underappreciated for its humanity and insight.  I attempt to fill this gap through education of the history, process, and value of handcrafted ceramics.
